{"id":5192,"date":"2026-04-23T04:37:16","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T04:37:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ft365.org\/index.php\/2026\/04\/23\/uk-commits-90m-for-cybersecurity-and-pushes-for-resilience-pledge\/"},"modified":"2026-04-23T04:37:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T04:37:16","slug":"uk-commits-90m-for-cybersecurity-and-pushes-for-resilience-pledge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ft365.org\/index.php\/2026\/04\/23\/uk-commits-90m-for-cybersecurity-and-pushes-for-resilience-pledge\/","title":{"rendered":"UK Commits \u00a390m for Cybersecurity and Pushes for \u2018Resilience Pledge\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"cphContent_pnlArticleBody\" data-layout-id=\"2\" data-edit-folder-name=\"text\" data-index=\"0\">\n<p>The UK government has announced a \u00a390m ($120m) injection into cybersecurity aiming to strengthen the nation\u2019s cyber resilience.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Revealed at the UK National Cyber Security Centre\u2019s (NCSC) annual CYBERUK conference on April 22, Dan Jarvis, the UK\u2019s Minister for Security, said the funding would help provide support to small and medium sized businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Javis said alongside this that, the government aims to help organizations implement the Cyber Essentials standard.<\/p>\n<p>Last summer, quarterly certifications surpassed the 10,000 milestone for the first time. Speaking to media during CYBERUK,\u00a0Jonathan Ellison, NCSC Director for National Resilience, said the uptake for Cyber Essentials in the last financial year was up around 20% compared to the previous.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He noted this is the best year the program has had but would like to see greater uptake.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jarvis has also called for every major organization to\u00a0sign a new Cyber Resilience Pledge which will be launched in the summer.<\/p>\n<p>Businesses will be able to become signatories if they take three concrete actions to increase their security:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make cyber security a board-level responsibility<\/li>\n<li>Sign up to the National Cyber Security Centre\u2019s free Early Warning service<\/li>\n<li>Require Essentials certification across their supply chains<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While this government approach spears to be a valiant effort to push cybersecurity to those who need it most, some in the industry have been quick to criticize.<\/p>\n<p>James Neilson, SVP of International at OPSWAT,\u00a0 said whilst the investment is \u201cnice on paper and helpful for SMEs\u201d it is \u201cnowhere near enough\u201d to address the scale of the problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSMEs either have small security teams or none at all, so it\u2019s not just a funding issue but also a knowledge issue,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Neilson advocated for the UK government to heavily invest in support and guidance.<\/p>\n<p>Along similar lines, Trevor Dearing, director of critical infrastructure at Illumio, said, \u201cWhat many small businesses lack is practical guidance on how to protect sensitive data and keep critical services running when incidents occur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <em>Infosecurity <\/em>at CYBERUK, Jonathan Lee, Director of Cyber Strategy,\u00a0TrendAI said, \u201cI think the government and the NCSC are saying the right things, but we have to move from this position of gently encouraging organizations to do things, providing advice and guidance to providing some incentive for them to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regarding incentives Lee noted that things like tax credits should be explored further.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s incentivize people to invest more in their resilience because ultimately, we\u2019re told it\u2019s a team sport and everyone needs to work together.
