That number is based on data from the Department of Labor\u2019s Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W).<\/p>\n<p>A 2.6 percent increase would raise the average Social Security payment for retired workers from $1,980.86 (as of February 2025) to $2,032.36 in 2026, an increase of $51.50. Monthly reports on the Consumer Price Index help organizations like the Senior Citizens League predict the COLA ahead of time.<\/p>\n<p>Social Security payments are a lifeline for millions of Americans, with an estimated 73.9 million people receiving some form of Social Security benefits in April 2025.<\/p>\n<p>While COLA estimates give you a good idea of what to expect next year, it doesn\u2019t paint the full picture.
